Neuromorphic Computing on FPGA

🇬🇧 Students will design a neuromorphic computing architecture on an FPGA. Neuromorphic computing uses designs inspired by the biological brain [1]. An FPGA is a programmable integrated circuit on which we can implement a hardware architecture [2].

  • Knowledge about hardware design (FPGA or VLSI)
  • Basic knowledge of Verilog HDL

What you will learn

  • How to design hardware architecture (FPGA/VLSI) using commercial tools
  • An understanding of machine learning and neural networks
  • Practice using English in paper writing, discussions, and seminars

Software platform for Neuromorphic Computing

🇬🇧 Students will develop a platform for training prosthetic applications using spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP). This biologically inspired learning rule adjusts synaptic weights according to the relative timing of spikes. It is based on how neurons learn and is used in neuromorphic computing, which draws on designs from the biological brain [1].

Genetic algorithms for large-scale task mapping

🇬🇧 This project studies how to map work onto neuromorphic computing hardware. Neuromorphic computing systems usually consist of thousands or even millions of neurons. Neurons are grouped into cores connected by inter-chip or intra-chip networks. A genetic algorithm searches for approximate solutions using a process inspired by natural evolution. In this project, students develop a Python tool to map neurons to computing resources.
