TA, RA, and part-time work

If you are concerned about funding your studies, discuss it with us early. We support students who face financial difficulties and are willing to contribute to the lab. Completing a degree can open opportunities for work or further study, but you need a practical plan for your expenses.

Teaching assistant work

Teaching assistants (TAs) help course instructors with grading, tutoring, and administrative tasks. Payment is 20,000 to 40,000 JPY per course, and students can typically take on 3 to 4 courses a year.

TA assignments prioritize courses taught within our lab. You can also ask other professors about opportunities in their courses.

Research assistant work

Research assistants (RAs) contribute to ongoing projects through programming, data analysis, literature review, and experiments. Strong programming skills are essential. We assess students according to their abilities and the needs of the project.

Payment ranges from 10,000 to 70,000 JPY per month, depending on the project and your contribution. RA work depends on project funding and your skills, so we cannot guarantee a position in advance. Developing your technical skills can improve your eligibility.

Doctoral students may receive an additional university RA stipend that typically covers approximately the cost of tuition.

Other part-time work

Current and former students have worked part-time for local companies. Ask them about their experience and how to find out more.

Planning your budget

Tuition is approximately 45,000 JPY per month. Living costs are around 50,000 JPY per month if you cook for yourself. All payment and cost figures on this page are in Japanese yen.

Contact us or discuss TA and RA opportunities with the PI if you have questions.

Experiences of self-financed students

The PI completed his Ph.D. as a self-financed student, fully supported by TA and RA work, and went on to an academic career.

A former master's student, Mr. NGUYEN Ngo Doanh, also funded his degree through several TA and RA roles. He published 4 journal papers, including two IEEE Transactions papers, received the Award of Excellence for AY2023, and received a full scholarship for a Ph.D. at a European university.
